Why Attention Under Pressure Is One of the Greatest Challenges to Human Performance

Have you ever arrived somewhere and realised you don't remember the last ten minutes of the drive?

Or become so focused on solving one problem that you completely missed another developing right in front of you?

If so, you've experienced one of the most fundamental characteristics of the human brain.


Attention is limited.


As humans, we like to believe we're good at multitasking. We pride ourselves on juggling competing demands and "keeping an eye on everything."


Neuroscience tells us a different story.


The reality is that our attention behaves much more like a spotlight than a floodlight. It illuminates one area exceptionally well, while everything outside that beam receives far less processing. Under normal conditions we move that spotlight continuously, scanning our environment and updating our understanding of what's happening.

Under pressure, however, that spotlight often stops moving.

When Attention Becomes Tunnel Vision

Psychologists refer to this as attentional tunnelling or fixation.

It's a survival mechanism that has helped humans respond to threats for thousands of years.

When something unexpected occurs, your brain rapidly decides what appears to be the highest priority and directs your attention towards it.

In many situations, that's exactly what you want.


If a child runs onto the road in front of your car, your attention should immediately focus on avoiding the collision.

The problem arises when the brain incorrectly judges what deserves that attention.

While you're focused on one issue, other important information may go unnoticed.

Not because your eyes didn't see it.

But because your brain didn't process it.


Aviation Provides the Perfect Example

Pilots are trained to constantly scan.

  • Outside the aircraft.

  • Inside the cockpit.

  • Engine instruments.

  • Flight instruments.

  • Navigation.

  • Weather.

  • Traffic.

  • Radio communications.

The objective isn't to stare at any single source of information.

It's to keep moving your attention.



Imagine an engine warning light illuminates during flight.

Immediately your attention is drawn to the engine instruments.

You begin diagnosing the problem.


Meanwhile:

  • Airspeed slowly decays.

  • Altitude begins to drift.

  • Traffic awareness reduces.

  • Navigation is forgotten.

  • Weather continues changing ahead.

The engine warning may have been the first problem.

Loss of situational awareness quickly becomes the second.

And often, it's the second problem that creates the greater risk.


Experience Doesn't Prevent Fixation

One of the biggest misconceptions in aviation and other high-performance industries is that experience somehow eliminates these human limitations.

It doesn't.

In fact, experienced professionals often become exceptionally efficient at diagnosing problems.

That efficiency can unintentionally reinforce fixation because confidence encourages us to stay engaged with the task we've decided is most important.

This isn't a lack of professionalism.

It's simply how attention works.


This Isn't Just About Aviation

Although I spend much of my career in aviation, this phenomenon exists everywhere.

A surgeon concentrating on one complication may overlook changes elsewhere in the patient's condition.

A firefighter entering a burning structure can become fixated on reaching a casualty while environmental hazards continue to develop.

Police officers, paramedics, military personnel, athletes and business leaders all experience moments where one problem consumes their entire attention while other threats quietly emerge.

The human brain doesn't distinguish between professions.

It simply allocates attention where it believes it is needed most.


Attention Is Part of Your

Safety System

One of the central ideas behind the Human Safety System is that safety isn't created solely by procedures, technology or regulation.

It's also created by the quality of human thinking.

Where your attention goes...

Your decisions follow.

If your attention narrows too early, your decision-making becomes based on incomplete information.

That's why effective professionals don't simply react.

They deliberately manage where their attention is directed.


Training Attention

The good news is that attention can be trained.

Professional pilots use structured instrument scan techniques.

Medical teams deliberately pause during complex procedures to reassess the whole situation.

Emergency crews use verbal cross-checks to ensure everyone is maintaining a broader picture.

These aren't just procedural requirements.

They're methods of preventing attentional tunnelling.



Simple questions can also help:

  • What else is changing?

  • What haven't I looked at recently?

  • Am I solving the right problem?

  • Has my attention become too narrow?

Sometimes asking a single question is enough to widen your perspective.


A Lesson from Air Racing

When I'm sitting on the runway before an air race, there are dozens of competing demands.

Power settings.

Engine temperatures.

My race line.

Other aircraft.

Height.

Wind.

The start sequence.

The formation on the lead aircraft.

My own thoughts.

If I consciously tried to monitor every one of those variables equally, I would quickly become overwhelmed.

Instead, experience has taught me something different.

My attention needs to constantly move.

The skill isn't concentrating harder.

The skill is knowing when to shift your attention before it becomes trapped.

That lesson applies just as much in everyday life as it does in aviation.


Final Thoughts

Attention is one of the greatest strengths of the human brain.

It's also one of its greatest limitations.

We cannot focus on everything at once.

But we can become better at recognising when our attention has narrowed too far.

Because the safest professionals aren't those who never become fixated.

They're the ones who recognise it early enough to widen their view before it affects their decisions.

That's one of the foundations of the Human Safety System.
